May 2025 - Allegany County

Summary:

Wide-spread flash flooding in Western Maryland (Allegany & Garrett) occurred on May 13-15, 2025.

A low pressure system remained nearly stationary in the Ohio River Valley from May 12 through May 15, 2025, bringing multiple days of inclement weather to the Mid Atlantic states. The system pulled moisture in from the Atlantic Ocean which, when it encountered the Appalachian Mountains of Western Maryland, produced heavy rains and thunderstorms that resulted in stream flooding and flash flooding.

MDEM, in coordination with FEMA, determined the damage eligible under the Stafford Act was estimated to be at least $33.7 million, in Allegany and Garrett counties. A Presidential Disaster Declaration was submitted June 11, 2025, denied on July 22, 2025, and appealed on August 19, 2025. The appeal was denied on October 22, 2025.
